Are we fighting for the same cause from opposite ends????? :)

I too meant that marks are scrap way of assessing someone. If not why will I treat myself a genuis when someone like Ms. Brainy is around. But I still say schooling in India holds one of the best value system, until the top marks,state ranks...etc came into picture. Choice of what is to be pursued should be served on the plate only after class 10. When I said System is good , but our (includes students, teachers, parents) way of looking at I should change, I meant that a childs score doesn't really show his/her talent. As long as parents-teachers won't stop looking at marks as the criteria to judge a child, the mindset of a child will never change, eventually we won't endup looking at things in the right manner.

@saraswathi good to see these schools. "The syllabus and methods of the Council are decided by real teachers, not professors or scientists sitting in conferences and deciding what should be added. -- So true.

The variable voluntary fee structure in Krish. school says enough about their attitude towards education. This is exceptional when comparing with others who approach it with greed. One possible way to remove the business from education is by revolutionizing the government chain of schools. I could sense already some reforms in elementary schools near my villages.

I would rate my schooling as very good till 8th standard. But when i entered that damn 9th they taught me 10th standard books and i became bored with them by writing tests daily. By the time board exams came i knew each and every problem by heart in maths :) #fail.

It was perhaps the mad worlds market pressure which drove my school towards it.

And when it comes to engineering education, I am an electronics engineer who doesnt know how a diode works. Thats good enough reason to shut the doors of "ANNA UNIVERSITY". But i believe if the system produces inquisitive minds in lower stages the students will take care of themselves when they move up the ladder.

PS: I am absolutely thrilled with the student pages in primerose school. Fantastic.

@Deepak:
Wow, this comment of yours is a "true vision" of education. EVERY child is a genius. So instead of ranking a child, every child is outstanding. You may be interested in knowing that there are already some schools that implement this scheme of "Freedom", "No exams", "Making every child outstanding" like the Krishnamurthi school: http://www.theschoolkfi.org/theschool/vision.php

Primrose school in Pondicherry: http://www.primroseschool.org/

The change should start from the elementary school. The way the teachers teach, what they teach, how they teach it, the affection & freedom given to a child to bloom, to be self-reliant, independent should be the goal of every school. As the society's consciousness towards a better education rises, the system will surely change. One way is for young people to enter the system as educationists and teachers. Infact, I have the optimism to think that within the next 25 years, the system would surely change thanks to higher aspiration of the society & people for a better life and future.

@Hariram:

I disagree with your point of view of exams. "Exams" in the present system only help in memorisation of facts. Esp with the board exam system for 10th, 11th & 12th grades. For majority of students its a tough, irrelevant & unnecessary thing. Ofcourse if you look at the system in a different way and enjoy what you read you will definitely benefit & there are a small % of students who do it like you. But that does not mean we continue with a system which we know is bad.

Ofcourse scales and evaluations are necessary to assess a child but they are essential only to identify the line of genius of the child and to encourage him in that line. Such scales or measures are not yet there in the world yet.

But your views are valuable because you brought out a valid point of evaluations & each subject teaching you a different thing.

@Hari I appreciate that you are way too optimistic and you must also accept that being so is naturally an exception.I agree that if the change is in a individuals way of looking at the system he gets little benefits. But imagine if the system changes the benefits will reach even more people(aka society)and create more excellence. Life will be lot better.

We(I) have had this discussion umpteen times but solution seems to be a generation away where we will have more Haris:) For the system to change we should enter the system!Not just at engineering levels but i feel the change should start from the elementary school.

Current system is pathetic when there is "First RANK" it leaves 39 unhappy hearts in a class of forty. Rather it should be a class where all the students are "OUTSTANDING".

Only place where I see the system should change.. is to give an option to the students to choose what they want to learn...after a particular stage I I am no genuis to decide at what stage) :)

I agree to your point of view.

But my view is different, yet stays within the existing system. I think it was one of your posts that I had written I love exams. It is not because I score good marks, nor I wan to prove anything, it is sheer sense of assessing myself. I consider myself an average student when it comes to marks (you can also be an eye-witness, if you have good memory). Things changed when I joined College and realised how education is to be treated. I was not among the ones who would prepare for EAMCETS.. plz not my cup of tea to remember the short cuts just to score marks, only reason why I scored very less marks in Maths in EAMCET and missed full marks in Physics by one mark. But I rate me as the best ever student I have seen in my life ( it is not self-boasting but I call it proclaiming one's efficiency.... something taught to me by my Value Education lecturer in college) when it comes to understanding why I am studying something. I pursued my grad in Elec because I knew my college offers Elec with computers and Physics). computers - it was talk of the town, Physics - My favourite even now or may be bcoz I share my B'day with Eienstien(barring the time zone diference.. as pointed out by you).

So I feel it is not the system that has to change, but the way of looking at the system should change.

- Learn from what you read.....
- The stories narrated in English n other languages are bound to have sub-concious effect on you, if you put slightest of effort.
- Science tells you why are things the way they are.
- Social tells you who, what, when where
-Mathematics - tells you how

@vishwa:

Thanks for your comment. You point out the realities of the present system well. It is true that changes cannot be implemented by those that do not know themselves what "real education" is. However, I feel when our aspiration for a better education rises, there is a possibility that the future generations will be fed up of the "memorisation", "exams", "getting degrees for securing a job" and will come forward to change this education. There will be a thirst to obtain "real knowledge". Once the thirst has been invoked in the society, the change will happen. I am confident of it. As they say, every change happens with the first step, this change in our aspirations & a feeling of necessity to seek a greater and more fulfilling education will be the first step.
